Merchant Account Credit Card Processing

How does merchant account credit card processing work?

Merchant account credit card processing works in a very straightforward manner. The business that has a merchant account is given a credit card processing machine (or several machines, depending on how large the business is and how many machines they need). It is connected to a phone line, and quite possibly the cash register itself. When a customer is ready to pay for their purchases, they or the business person swipes the card through the machine (or, in the event that the card is damaged or not present, the card information is typed into the machine). The machine "reads" the information, and then processes the transaction by using the phone line to connect to the credit card provider and checking for the funds, and then placing a hold on those funds. A receipt is printed out and signed, and the customer goes on their way. The whole process takes a matter of minutes. The money from the transaction, minus a transaction fee, is deposited into the business's checking account on the next scheduled deposit date.

Who can do merchant account credit card processing?

While the business who accepts credit cards is responsible for the use of their credit card machine, or terminal, it is the bank or other financial institution that provides the account that actually processes the credit cards. The machines provided read the card and check on the availability of the specified funds. Those funds are then debited from the credit card, transferred to the bank or financial institution, and then deposited into the business checking account of the business on a specified date.

Are online stores eligible for merchant account credit card processing?

Absolutely! The majority of online businesses and stores function so that the entire shopping experience, from the browsing to the selection of the item(s) to the checkout to the actual paying of the item(s), can be done online, with no cash, checks or money orders being mailed. Not only is this very convenient for both the customer and the store, but very secure for both the customer and the store as well!
